Assessments/Classroom Guidance

Assessments

We will have two parent/teacher conferences each school year; one in the fall and one in the spring. In the fall we will get to know your family, check-in from the summer, and mutually set goals for your child. In the spring we will reflect on the year and share child’s creations. Early childhood is a time of rapid development and growth. We reference the Early Childhood Indicators of Progress (ECIPS) as a developmental guide in both our emergent curriculum and child reflections. All reflections are observation driven. Documentation may include written anecdotes, photos, and samples of children’s work. Teachers will observe each of the eight learning domains represented in the ECIPs in children’s play and work throughout the day.

Classroom Guidance/Discipline

Nurturing, responsive, inquiry.

We use an approach of positive behavior guidance by offering encouragement and affirmation, as well as clearly stated boundaries. When partnering with a child to problem solve, we create a shared understanding of the challenge at hand. Asking questions, perspective taking, and identifying emotion are all skills that we practice and encourage. We believe that children learn best when they experience the balance of freedom and responsibility that comes with solving their own problems and facing logical consequences.

Closely observing children at play gives us almost all of the understanding we need to determine what course of action to take with each individual. By approaching a situation that may be a challenge for a child with inquiry, holding space for their big feelings and clearly listening to all perspectives ultimately guide kids toward finding positive solutions.

“Creative play is a like a spring that bubbles up from deep within a child, it is refreshing and enlivening.”

-Joan Almon, Alliance for Childhood
